Sidestep upset-minded Fort Kent, 54-49

The Lady Shiretowners traveled to Fort Kent and senior center Rachel Foster had her way with the Warriors, scoring 30 points on the way to a 54-49 victory. The win improved Houlton’s record to 4-1 on the season.
However the home team managed to give Houlton a serious scare in the last quarter, using four three-point shots to cut the Lady Shires’ 16-point advantage to just three points with 90 seconds to go in the game.
“I thought the kids played very well the first three quarters. However, we had a bit of a meltdown in the fourth. When their shooting guards get hot, they are extremely tough to stop,” said Houlton coach Shawn Graham.
Graham said Fort Kent played a box and one defense on Foster. “She kept working hard all night and managed to put forth a phenomenal game for us. She finished the game with 30 points, 20 rebounds, and 11 blocks,” he said.
Also hitting for double digits was Desiree Dow with 12 points. The win improved Houlton’s record to 4-1 on the season.
Emily Pelletier tossed in five three-pointers and scored 23 to keep Fort Kent in the ballgame. Teammate Taylor Boucher chipped in with 18 in the loss for the 3-2 Warriors.
“I give our kids a lot of credit for keeping their composure and not allowing the hostile environment get to them. Overall, I think this experience will help us become a better team,” said Graham. Fort Kent, he predicted, will win a number of ballgames and should prove to be a pointworthy win for the Lady Shires.
The Houlton girls were scheduled to play two road games to close out the year; they travel to Madawaska Dec. 28 and visit Hodgdon, Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008.
