To the editor:
As we approach the Maine Presidential Primary Caucuses, I would like to encourage all Aroostook County residents to participate in this important political process. Party affiliation (or non-affiliation) is not as important as accepting our responsibility as citizens of our free Republic to understand and operate our political system correctly. This simply means registering to vote, studying the platforms of the two major parties, making a decision to enroll (or not) in one of them, and either backing or becoming candidates for public office at the local, state and/or national levels.
In recent years, we have reduced our emphasis on citizenship education; this I believe has contributed to a lack of understanding of how government works (or is supposed to work) and a corresponding lack of accountability of our so-called public servants.
