Hoop round up: Lady Shires improve to 7-1
The Houlton Lady Shires improved their season record to 7-1, as they overtook host Schenck on Monday night, 61-27 after stepping up their press in the second half.

The Lady Shires turned a one-point lead into a 24-19 halftime advantage and then outscored the Wolverines, 18-4 in the third to break the game open.
Rachel Foster led Houlton with 19 points, while Vanessa Sanderson and Desiree Dow each scored 10 points for the winners.

Last Saturday, the Lady Shires defeated visiting Calais, 51-30 behind four starters in double figures.
The Lady Shires led by 10 points through the first half, holding a 27-17 halftime advantage. The home team opened the game up in the third, 35-26 and went on to outscore the Blue Devils, 16-4 in the final period.
Sanderson and Foster paced Houlton’s offense with 13 points apiece, while Dow and Emily Bartlett each had 10 points for the winners.
The Katahdin Lady Cougars rolled to another win on Monday, 38-23 over Fort Fairfield.
Olivia McNally paced Katahdin’s offense with 13 points, while Kayla Stevens dropped in a dozen points.
The Lady Cougars held Fort Fairfield to 12 points through three quarters, while taking a nine-point lead into the final period en route to the win.
The Hodgdon Lady Hawks’ hustle kept them close to Washburn on Monday night, however, the Beavers held on for the 36-25 victory behind Kelsee McLaughlin, Erica McDougall and 6-1 Rachel Palmer, who all had four points in the opening period to stake a 14-4 lead.

The Beavers took an 18-7 lead into intermission. But, the Lady Hawks couldn’t muster enough offense — even though they gave a solid defensive effort — to cut the lead to single digits, as they fell behind 27-14 after three periods.
Sam Carpenter paced Hodgdon with 11 points, including three 3-pointers in second-half action.
McLaughlin finished with 12 points for Washburn, while teammates McDougall and Palmer netted 11 and eight respectively.
Last Saturday, the Lady Hawks dropped a game to visiting Katahdin, 53-38.
The Lady Cougars wasted no time establishing an 18-5 first-period lead and extending it to 28-13 at halftime. Hodgdon outscored Katahdin, 16-10 in the third to narrow the scoring gap, but Katahdin took a 15-9 scoring advantage in the final period en route to the win.
McNally led Katahdin with 17 points, while Alisha Majkowski added 12 more, including nine first-half points.
For Hodgdon, Melissa Quint scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Southern Aroostook Warriors let a game slip away in overtime last Saturday in Limestone, 61-55.
The Warriors turned a one-point lead into a 33-24 halftime advantage before watching it dissolve in the third, as the Eagles outscored the Warriors, 19-8 for a 43-41 lead. The teams played evenly in the final period, but the Eagles used a 9-3 scoring surge in overtime to post the win.
Colby Clark tossed in 22 points for Southern Aroostook, while Tyler Robinson netted 20 more.
The East Grand Lady Vikings earned a 51-21 win over visiting Easton on Saturday behind Kelsey Daoust’s game-high 25 points.
Daoust scored 18 of her total points in the second half, as East Grand took an 11-10 lead and broke the game open, 34-15 in the third en route to the win.
Courtney Lloyd tossed in 12 points and Nikki Tuck added 10 more for the winners.
But, on Friday night, Jan. 4, the Lady Vikings were overwhelmed by host Woodland, 87-6.
After jumping to a 25-2 first-quarter lead, East Grand was held to a point in the second and third quarters and shutout in the final period.
Daoust scored three points.
The Fort Fairfield Tigers defended their home court with a 63-50 victory over Katahdin of Stacyville.

The Tigers led 18-8 to start the game and built a comfortable 31-16 halftime lead. The Cougars outscored the Tigers, 15-11 in the third, but couldn’t recover from the early deficit.
Tom Anderson finished the night with 19 points, while Evan McCarthy netted 12 and Lucas Craig chipped in with 10 more.
The Van Buren Crusaders jumped to a 21-6 first-quarter lead last Friday night and cruised by host Greater Houlton Christian Academy, 84-33.
Alex Crone’s nine points led GHCA’s offense.
The Houlton Shiretowners picked up a lopsided victory over visiting Hodgdon, 70-30 last Thursday at Houlton Alumni Gymnasium.
Houlton’s ball pressure made it difficult for the Hawks, as the Shiretowners’ 22-6 first-quarter lead was hard for Hodgdon to recover from, as they trailed 39-16 at halftime. Houlton extended its lead to 54-23 after three en route to the win.
James Bates dropped in 15 points for Houlton, while Corey Woodworth played a strong game off the bench, scoring 12 points. Parker Brown and Josh Beals tossed in 10 points apiece, as the Shiretowners showed their offensive balance.
For Hodgdon, Chris Williams and Travis Quint each had six points.
In Dyer Brook, the Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors turned a one-point halftime lead into a 10-point victory, 58-48, over Katahdin last Thursday.
Leading 23-22 at halftime, the Lady Warriors spread their lead in the third, outscoring Katahdin 17-11 en route to the win.
Evangeline Goodall paced SACS’ offense with 19 points, while Brittany Charette scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Liz Goodall rounded out the top scoring for SACS with a dozen points.
For Katahdin, Olivia McNally scored a game-high 22 points, while teammate JaLisa Moore chipped in with 12 points.
The visiting Woodland Dragons (6-2) overpowered East Grand, 94-26 in Danforth last Thursday.
After building a 33-4 first-quarter lead, the Dragons nearly doubled their score before halftime, 64-14, cruising to victory.
Kaleb Dicker paced East Grand with 15 points.
