Special to the Star-Herald
I visited the shelter last weekend (no I don’t work there, I am a volunteer) and was amazed to see how many kittens we have available for adoption. Usually kittens are easy to place, but possibly because of the new state of Maine law that requires adopters to leave a deposit, they just aren’t moving.
The saddest thing is that many kittens are growing up at the shelter – becoming adults – and even harder to find homes for. It is a sad state of affairs.
I have some food for thought for you. The shelter bought a mini van years ago, but it has since lost the transmission and has been parked. We are without a shelter vehicle. It is necessary for us to have a vehicle to pick up supplies, take injured animals to the vet, and to visit the local nursing homes with the animals. Ever thought about donating your vehicle to the Central Aroostook Humane Society as a tax write-off? We are a non-profit and tax exempt. The donation of a vehicle in good running condition would be greatly appreciated. A van would be ideal. We honestly don’t have the money to fix our van or the money to purchase another vehicle. Just food for thought.
We have greatly appreciated every donation. The one item other than a van that would be greatly appreciated is a photocopier in good, working condition. These are big items and items necessary for our shelter to continue to provide the public with this service. We work hard to adopt out only healthy animals, both physically and mentally sound. It is a tough job, but one we take great pride in. These big items are a necessity and we honestly can’t live without them, but the increase in animals needing help has increased the amount of money we have to spend. We are also actively spaying and neutering which also costs us money. Help with either of these items would be greatly appreciated. Please give the shelter a call if you wish to make a donation.
Adopting an animal is a lifelong commitment and should not be a decision that is taken lightly. Please educate yourself as to the costs and responsibilities of pet ownership before you look for a pet. When you visit the shelter, talk to our friendly staff that will help you to pick the animal that is right for you. They work with these animals daily and know them inside and out.
The Central Aroostook Humane Society is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. You can also visit us on line at www.centralaroostookhumanesociety.org or give us a call at 764-3441.
Please have your pets spayed or neutered.

New Year’s day, the Robinsons, of Fort Fairfield, decided that it was so beautiful, the girls wanted to ride their pony. So Koty, Megan and Anna all enjoyed a walk up and down the hill by our house. Pictured are Megan atop Koty, as dad, Tom Robinson, keeps a close watch on the pair.
