HOULTON — Six men involved in an alleged methadone distribution ring were indicted in the most recent session of the Aroostook County grand jury.
According to information released Friday by District Attorney Neale Adams, the grand jury returned indictments against Donald Flanders, 48, of Houlton; John Neureuther, 32, of Houlton; David Landry, 56, of Hodgdon; Charles Hawkes, 34, of Houlton; Casey Corbett, 19, of Houlton and Nathan Richards, 25, of Patten.
All of the men are facing the charge of unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, except Landry, who was indicted for aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs. Because Landry was convicted of felony drug trafficking in 2001, he was charged with aggravated trafficking, say officials.
The men were rounded up close to a month ago after an investigation by agents with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA). Darrell Crandall, regional MDEA commander, said they believe Landry was passing along large quantities of methadone to Donald Flanders. Flanders was, in turn, selling the majority of those tablets to Nathan Richards; Richards was allegedly selling the drugs at the street level.
Agents had noticed an increase in the sale and abuse of methadone over the past year, Crandall said, and they believe the ring had been ongoing “for some time.”
The others, Hawkes, Neureuther and Corbett, were also arrested during the course of the investigation.
Thirty other individuals were indicted during the grand jury sessions in Houlton and Caribou. Adams has withheld one name until an arrest warrant could be executed.
