The Francis Malcolm Science Center is opening up a one-mile snowshoe trail for the residents of Easton. However, in order to be able to use the trail, you must attend an introduction hike with Vaughn Martin.
On this required hike you will be introduced to the procedures and rules of using the trail and then go on a hike of the entire trail. Introduction hikes will be on Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. and Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. Please call the Science Center at 488-5451 to sign up for one of these hikes. Please leave a message if no one answers. You may use your own snowshoes or rent a pair for $3.

The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club met on Thursday, Jan. 9, with 11 members, three new members and two guests. There were no meetings in the months of November and December because of dinners at the school cafeteria. After the potluck dinner, guest speaker Mona Lynch from the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging spoke to the group on fraud and abuse. She told the group that fraud was rampant, especially with the older generation, and that they should always be aware of what comes by way of the telephone, computer and mail, and to never give out their Social Security number or other personal information without proof of who wanted it. She said to call her at AAAA if anyone feels that they are being targeted. Out there they can put that information through the Smart Fact program on the Internet and find out what it is all about. She gave out papers with different information, such as the Medicare Private Fee program, and informed the group that this program can be more expensive and can put you out of Medicare all together. They were encouraged not to sign up for it.
Lynch told of a woman in Portage who had found a way to help diminish junk mail. She said to write on a piece of paper, “Please remove my name from this mailing list” with name and address and send it back in the return envelope that came with the mailing. Lynch also spoke on being prepared in case of a disaster, such as ice storm, loss of power or other emergencies, and showed the group her ‘go bag’ that she had packed with all the things she thought she would need in case of an emergency such as these. She also encouraged people to keep their homes stocked with water and food and something to keep them warm, in case of such an emergency. She reported that one would need a birth certificate to cross into Canada after Jan. 31, 2008.
Carol Fitzherbert, also from the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, spoke to the group for just a few minutes as she is the new coordinator for the Money Management program that she now works for part time. She had been with Social Services for many years before taking this position. She was asking for volunteers. She explained that any volunteer would be interviewed and have a background check before being accepted into the program. Their jobs would be to assist people who were having money management problems. If there is someone out there who is having that type of problem and wishes help, her telephone number is 676-3396.
Hospitalized
Joanne Johnson was taken to The Aroostook Medical Center last week by one of her children where she spent a few days and then was transferred to the rehabilitation part of the Mars Hill Health Care Facility.
Visits
Dottie and Duncan Beaton had quite a time getting to their daughter’s in Iowa right after Christmas. It took them three days, with bad weather, canceled flights and overloads. They have finally returned home, no worse for wear.

LUKE FULLER is well pleased with how his pioneer-type wheelbarrow turned out. The wheel is covered with a rough material for better traction. He made this as his project for Paul Dudley’s American History class at Easton Junior/Senior High School. Fuller’s father will probably put him to work with it once he gets it home.
