The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizens Club held its regular meeting Thursday, Jan. 24 at the West Ridge Manor recreation room with 15 members and one guest present. After a bountiful potluck dinner, the group saluted the flag and sang a patriotic song. The minutes of the last meeting were read by the secretary, Dottie Beaton. The treasurer, Lindy Fowler, reported on the amount left in the treasury and then called the roll.
Those present were Marie Hewitt, Dottie Beaton, Duncan Beaton, Paul DeMerchant, Liana DeMerchant, Lindy Fowler, Ida Doak, Edith Fuller, Arlene Ladner, Ailene Embleton, Joanne Johnson, Glenice Craig, Rena Richardson, Eldora Carter, Ezalee Smith, and guest, Dina Rogers.
The president read a letter sent to her from Steve Farnham, executive director of the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging. The letter was all about the large cuts that are going to be made by the state government from programs for the elderly in the near future. This should concern all senior citizens of the whole state. A bit more discussion was made on the “Pack to Go” bag for emergencies, shown to the group at the last meeting. Some had started their bag. They felt that some organization in the town, the fire department or town office should have a generator on hand, also for emergencies. At one time, the high school building was the place to go in case of the great loss of electricity or other catastrophes, but the school doesn’t have a generator either.
It was voted to make a donation to the Neil Wortman Scholarship in memory of his brother, Aldine Wortman.
The list of new officers for 2008 was brought before the group. They were, president, Marie Hewitt; vice president, Nina Trask; secretary, Eldora Carter; assistant, Dottie Beaton; treasurer, Lindy Fowler; assistant, Duncan Beaton. These names were accepted by the group.
Dues of $1 are due at this time. Those 80 years old and over do not pay dues. It was discussed about having Mary Ellen Trainer and Kathy Perry put on a dinner for the club instead of going out to a restaurant. Travel by bus may have to be cut because of the cost of gasoline. The president also asked for ideas for speakers at some of the meetings. The group seemed interested in having someone from the fire department or ambulance service show the group about CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. Marie is to find someone for this program. The guest, Dina Rogers, suggested that the group might be interested in learning to weave or braid rugs. A card was signed to be sent to Elvira McAdam at The Aroostook Medical Center. The next meeting will be a Valentine’s Day party Feb. 14. If you have decorations, please bring them. The meeting was adjourned and the group stayed and played Bingo.
Ellen Trask reports that the final count of signatures that she and several others worked so hard to obtain to help override the vote to consolidate our schools and bring the vote to referendum was approximately 450. In all, there will not be enough collected statewide to accomplish this objective. It’s evident that many of the citizens of this state aren’t too concerned about this loss of control of our schools because there will not be enough signatures at this time to override the vote.
TESTIFY, the music ministry team from Bethany Bible College, will be in concert at the Easton Wesleyan Church Feb. 3 beginning at 10:45 a.m., and Feb. 9 beginning at 6 p.m. there will be an adult Valentine’s Party at the same church.
Hospital
Elvira McAdam returned to her home at West Ridge Manor from the convalescent part of the Presque Isle Health Care Facility, in the middle of the week, week before last, but had to be taken to The Aroostook Medical Center several days later, suffering with respiratory problems.
Benefit
Twila Hoyt and Carrie Bishop, along with Mike Doughty, will be hosting a benefit spaghetti dinner for their mother, DeeDee (Tompkins) Lloyd, of Perth-Andover, Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Easton Odd Fellow’s Hall. DeeDee has been hospitalized at a Halifax Hospital since Jan. 2 where she had her voice box removed because of cancer. She is not healing as well as hoped due to earlier radiation treatments. The dinner will be at 3 p.m. and they will be accepting donations at the door.
