Class D girls’ teams play off for right to advance to quarterfinals

    The high school basketball season has come to a close, with postseason play getting under way yesterday, with the girls’ preliminary contests.
    The Houlton Lady Shires were the only girls’ team that is secured into the Eastern Maine Tournament, as they are seeded number-one in Class C. They will match up against the winner of No. 8 Fort Kent/No. 9 Piscataquis at 11:05 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the Bangor Auditorium.
    Yesterday, weather permitting, Class D local girls’ teams fighting through a preliminary game were: Southern Aroostook, Katahdin, Hodgdon and GHCA.
    The No. 8 Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors hosted No. 9 Katahdin, a third game this season between these two squads who split on the regular season.
    The No. 13 Hodgdon Lady Hawks traveled to Presque Isle to face the Ashland Hornets, while GHCA Lady Eagles hosted No. 12 Shead at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
    In other girls’ preliminary matchups, No. 3 CAHS hosted No. 14 Lubec; No. 6 Bangor Christian hosted No. 11 Deer Isle-Stonington; No. 2 Woodland hosted No. 15 Fort Fairfield and No. 7 Jonesport-Beals hosted No. 10 Machias.
    The Washburn Lady Beavers were secure as the top seed in Class D and await the winner of Southern Aroostook/Ashland for their quarterfinal game at 8:35 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18 at the Bangor Auditorium.
    Each winner of the preliminary games moves into the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
    The winner of Ashland/Hodgdon will play the winner of GHCA/Shead at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18.
    The winner of CAHS/Lubec will meet the winner of Bangor Christian/Deer Isle-Stonington at 9:35 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, while the winner of Woodland/Fort Fairfield and the winner of Jonesport-Beals/Machias will play their quarterfinal matchup at 11:05 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 18.
