HOULTON, Maine — Red was the color of choice for local supporters of “National Wear Red Day” on Friday, Feb. 1. Childcare providers throughout the County took part in the campaign, which promoted heart healthy lifestyles for men and women. The event focused on raising awareness about heart disease, which is currently the number-one killer of women in the United States.     Taking part in the event were the children of Eileen’s Day Care in Houlton. For 20 years, Eileen Bustard has been providing childcare services to families from the area and she wanted to show her support for healthy living with her youngsters.
“These kids know about healthy food,” said Bustard. “They do a lot of outdoor activities and today it was the Hokey Poky and a lot of dancing.”
Along with wearing the color red, the children were treated to a variety of heart-shaped snacks including watermelon, juice and cheese and crackers.
For their participation, childcare centers were entered into a contest and the winning provider will receive a heart healthy basket for all the children to enjoy.
