Application booklets remain available at the Houlton Town Office for the Maine Residents Property Tax and Rent Refund “Circuit Breaker” Program. Houlton’s tax assessor, Laureen Bither, encourages property taxpayers and renters to apply for the State of Maine refunds, noting individuals have until June 2, to submit an application for the 2006 refunds which have a maximum of $2,000.
Property taxpayers and renters may qualify if: they do not have a spouse or dependent and 2006 household income was $80,750 or less; or they have a spouse or dependent(s) and your 2006 household income was $105,750 or less and: 2006 property tax was more than four percent of your 2006 household income; or the rent you paid was more than 20 percent of your 2006 household income. (Note: Low-income Seniors do not need to meet these requirements.)
