HOULTON — Aroostook County Commissioners held a “routine” meeting at the Superior Court House on Feb. 20. Commissioners were asked to approve a number of items, including the matter of this year’s County tax bills.
“We do that on an annual basis,” explained County Administrator Doug Beaulieu. “After the budget was approved in November, we did the tax commitment, which means our ability to send out our tax bills.”
Beaulieu said it was a formality to get the approval from the commissioners for the commitment of taxes and he added they did just that.
Another item of interest on the agenda was the appointment of a public sector member to the Aroostook County Action Program board of directors. This year, Peter Caron was recommended for opening and the commissioners approved that recommendation. Caron is an Adult Education director in Fort Kent.
Beaulieu said the County provides a small amount of funding to ACAP each year, which averages out to be less than $6,000. The funding is just one way of showing support for the organization.
“Their agency is responsible for providing a host of social-service type services,” explained Beaulieu. “They re involved in various programs; workforce investment programs. They have a contract in Aroostook County to operate the career centers.
“They do a lot of different things,” he added.
The county commissioners meet monthly in various locations throughout Aroostook County. Their next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m. in Fort Kent.
