PRESQUE ISLE – In Tuesday, Jan. 29 basketball action, fans watched in anticipation as the final seconds of the game would determine which team came out on top in a nail-biter between the Caribou junior varsity Lady Vikings and Presque Isle junior varsity Lady Wildcats. The game, which was played in Presque Isle, didn’t prevent the Vikings from their win over the Wildcats, defeating the Lady Wildcats by a mere four points, 29-25.

Caribou’s tough defense, which caused problems early in the first quarter for the Wildcats, resulted in a number of Wildcat turnovers. However, the two teams managed to keep up with one another in the back and forth action, ending the first quarter with Caribou’s lead by three points, 8-5.
In the second quarter, things seemed to swing more for Presque Isle though. A sophomore, Haley Johnston, managed to cap eight points before halftime, which edged the Wildcats over Caribou by one point. The score was 13-12 by halftime and things started to look better for Presque Isle.
Coach Sue Ouellette must have said something during halftime that inspired the Vikings, because in the third quarter it was break-away after break-away for Caribou.
They managed to score seven points over the Wildcats and hold them to only two points resulting in a Caribou lead of 19-15 at the end of the third quarter.
Caribou managed to stay on top in the final quarter with the help of sophomore Danielle Soucy, who accumulated a total of 10 points in the whole game. Presque Isle had the ball numerous times in the last few seconds of the game when only down by four, but just couldn’t seem to capitalize.
Soucy was high scorer for the Caribou squad with 10 points and Haley Johnston, of Presque Isle, had a game-high of 12 points. The game’s final score was 29-25, a Viking victory over the Wildcats.
