Scholarships benefit local students

ELLSWORTH — The Aspire Scholarship Fund, recently established at the Maine Community Foundation, will support non-traditional students in Presque Isle and Washburn pursuing post-secondary education.     The Aspire Scholarship Fund is meant to encourage teenagers and young adults to have the courage to set goals and make them happen. It is the donors’ desire that students who receive a scholarship “will know that they have the potential for a bright future and that there are people who believe in them regardless of what their past looks like.”
The renewable scholarship has two deadlines in 2008: June 1 and Dec.15. Applications are available at www.mainecf.org and at the participating schools: Carleton  School (Alan Morris), Presque Isle Alternative High School (David Bartlett) and Washburn High School (Andrea Hallett). Applications are invited from students who have attended these schools but may have graduated from another high school or have subsequently received their GED. “Post-secondary education” is to be interpreted as broadly as possible to encourage students to pursue a course of study in an environment best suited to their style of learning.
For 25 years, the Maine Community Foundation has been partnering with donors and community groups to strengthen Maine communities through grants and scholarships.
