LITTLETON, Maine — It’s business-as-usual at the Littleton town meeting this year.
Town Clerk Jennifer Gogan this year’s warrant includes basic budget figures and other typical items.
The proposed municipal budget is $419,988, with $98,500 expected to come from surplus, $87,000 from excise and $234,488 from taxation.
Gogan said the budget total is up $6,414 from last year.
“The $6,414 increase is primarily due to an increase in the disposal fee per ton for solid waste, wages for all employees and increases to the library and Red Cross appropriations,” she explained. “Increases to highway, bridges and snow removal were offset by increases in the use of surplus and excise tax. Appropriations have increased $37,414, but the use of money from sources other than taxes has been increased $31,000.”
The municipal budget doesn’t include county or school taxes. Early information indicates the County tax bill will increase by roughly $6,900 for Littleton; the school budget won’t be available until June. Even with the county and school tax added in, Gogan said they’re hoping the see the overall tax commitment decrease.
“This is because the amount of Revenue Sharing available to reduce the commitment has increased by $27,000,” she said. “So, basically, as long as the school budget does not see a drastic increase, the mill rate should be about the same as last year.”
At the polls, voters will elect two people to the Board of Selectmen and two to the SAD 29 Board.
Robert Bartlett and Barry Campbell are each re-running for the 3-year terms on the Board of Selectmen.
Laurie Bartlett is re-running for a 3-year term on the school board, and Crystal Hagerman is running for a 1-year term. Hagerman was appointed to the school board in December 2007 to replace Angela Hines who moved to Hammond. If elected, Hagerman would finish out Hines’ original 3-year term.
On Monday, March 17, voting hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the town office; the town meeting will convene at 7 p.m. at the Meduxnekeag Ramblers Snowmobile Club on the Wiley Road.
