A Caribou man was ordered by a federal court to spend 15 months in jail and pay $1,100 in fines and assessments for conspiracy to import oxycodone into the United States at the Fort Fairfield golf course, according to a statement by the U. S. Department of Justice.     Andrew Adams, 23, was sentenced on March 3 in U.S. District Court in Bangor for conspiracy to import the controlled substance.  Adams pleaded guilty to the charge last October.
In addition to jail time, Adams will be on three years of supervised release, according to the statement by Paula Silsby, U.S. attorney in Bangor.
Court records said that on July 8, 2007, Adams was found in possession of 145 Oxycontin pills, which he had received from a Canadian man at the Fort Fairfield golf course that straddles the Canadian-U.S. border.
While the two men were in the Canadian section of the golf course, they exchanged money for pills, according to the Silsby statement. Adams hid the drugs in a box of golf balls and proceeded to the U.S. side of the golf course.
Adams was questioned by a Border Patrol agent while in the U.S. portion of the golf course parking lot. The pills were discovered and subsequently seized, according to investigators.
In a later interview with police, Adams admitted to getting the pills from the Canadian man while they were playing golf.
Also involved in the investigation were the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Boarder Patrol, the Fort Fairfield Police Department, Maine State Police and the Maine Warden Service.
