YBOA team takes Sheriff Cup

    ELLSWORTH – The 14-year-old Aroostook County Youth Basketball Organization of America team captured the Sheriff’s Cup in Ellsworth during the March 8 and 9 tournament by winning five straight games with six players.

    In game one the County clawed their way to a 60-17 win. Kayla Richards (Presque Isle) led the way with 21 points. Chelsea Nickerson (PI) had 16 points. In game two the County took a 65-34 win over the Eagles. Nickerson led with 20 points, Danielle Tracy (Fort Fairfield) had 12, Vicki McIntyre (Mars Hill) popped in 11 and Casey Bonville (PI) put up 10 points. In game three against Brewer the County bombed the Witches, 60-24. Nickerson again led scoring statistics with 20 points. Tracy added 12 points.
    In the semifinals against Sebasticook the County pressed their way to a 29-10 halftime lead, and sailed to a 39-27 win. McIntyre put up 13 points, and Nickerson shot for 10. The County faced Calais in the finals, playing their third game in a row. The County showed signs of fatigue trailing 24-14 at the half. However, in the second the County tied the game up with a basket by Bonville, and went ahead on a pair of foul shots by Amanda Fogarty (Houlton) and a third foul shot by Richards. A last-second three-pointer fell short and the County claimed their second title in eight years, 35-32. Top scorers were Nickerson with 11 and Fogarty with 10. The overall record stands at 10-1.
    The 13-year-old County YBOA team hammered Brewer 51-22 in their opening game. Rachael Grew (MH) put in 16 points, and Brooke Labelle (Ashland) had 9 points. All players scored at least five points in the victory. In game two against Sebasticook, the County led 24-14 at the half, but could not handle the Sebasticook press and fell behind, 38-34. However, Amanda Hotham (FF) and Rebecca McDougall (Caribou) tied the score at 38 with just over a minute to go. Sebasticook held for the last shot and sank a clutch three-pointer with four seconds left to take a 41-38 lead. Hotham put in 12 points and Grew added 10 for the County. In game three, the County came out full force against the Maine Central Institute. Every player scored in the 51-31 win. Hotham shot for 15 points while Grew had 11. The team’s overall record is 7-2.
    The County 16-year-old team traveled to Fairfield to play in a round robin tourney during March 8 and 9. In game one against the North Stars, the County lost 51-33. Emily Pelletier (Fort Kent) led the scoring effort with 12 points. In game two against the Triple Threat, the County came away with a 39-29 win. Taylor Boucher (FK) put in 13 and Martha McPartland (H) had 11 points. Brewer took the court in game three against the County. The County fell behind early 19-7, but clawed their way back for a 44-41 win. Olivia McNeill’s (Katahdin) basket put the County up 42-41. Boucher and Emily Pelletier had nine points each as team high-scorers.
