The event was part of a statewide effort sponsored by Every Village Green, in support of Iraq Veterans Against the War and the Winter Soldier rallies taking place in Washington, D.C., noting the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq.
John Cancelarich of Presque Isle spoke during the church service, encouraging the assembled activists to believe that even though their individual actions may seem inconsequential, they must not give up. The Rev. Max Soucia delivered a prayer for peace and the church bell tolled five times, once for each year of the war.
Participants were given the opportunity to light candles and voice their concerns and support for our soldiers and U.S. and Iraqi citizens adversely affected by the war and violence.
The rally on Bennett Drive was met by many honks and waves of support and approval by passersby.
Anyone interesting in expressing their sentiments to end the war are invited to join the Bridge Walkers on the Aroostook River bridge in Presque Isle on every Sunday beginning at noon.
