Special to the Aroostook Republican
CPR still has several nice older pets at the shelter. Our March drive to find good homes for our adult cats has been going well. Last Saturday, nine adult cats were adopted. Each day brings one or two more adoptions and this gives us space to help those who desperately need us.

The kitten season is already at CPR. One beautiful momma cat came in last week with four double-pawed little gray kittens. They are gorgeous babies about 3 weeks old. A few days ago, a person brought in a 2-day old kitten he had found. This lovely momma of 4 made room for another at her drinking fountain and all five babies are doing well now and are in a great foster home. The foster mom tells us that the momma cat is very attentive to the tiny light beige orphan kitten.
CPR cats have been leukemia tested, spayed/neutered, freed of parasites and had shots updated. Medical care worth $130.00 per cat and we only charge $25.00 until March 31 (the senior discount of 50% is not included in this offer).
These animals are getting a great chance for a good life which is something most of them have never had before. With high prices of fuel this winter, people who have lots of love, just don’t have extra cash for the adoption. Our main mission is to find good homes for healthy, spayed/neutered pets and we are very pleased this is happening.
The kitten season is here already. It is rather early considering the high snow banks. One beautiful momma cat came in last week with four double-pawed little gray kittens. They are gorgeous babies about 3 weeks old. A few days ago, a person brought in a 2-day old kitten he had found. We have two extremely pregnant cats that came in yesterday and are in a temporary foster home right now while we search for another foster home to keep them until their babies are born and weaned. These are both sweet personalities just hoping that someone will give them a quiet room to give birth and allow her to nurture her little ones.
Fostering is a totally religious experience of the heart. I know because we have fostered hundreds of kittens and cats. How do we give them up? Because we love them and we know that in order to keep rescuing others, we must set limits for ourselves. Each animal is special and being special means finding the right home. This week, we also got in a beautiful Siamese/Himalayan mix which looks to be under a year old and has a sweet personality.
Rex, our young Lab/Dalmatian we wrote about last week, has been adopted. We are currently searching for a good home for Sam, a 10-year old neutered malamute mix. Sam would be a lovely dog for a couple who like to take long walks. Sam is in good health and is a happy boy. We have a new little white dog with brown patches and smooth hair. We have named her Pixie as she doesn’t weigh more that 15lbs. She is a happy little personality. We have a brown medium-size mother dog with her pup which looks to be about 3 months old. Both are very nice happy personalities.
Our staff is well versed in matching the pet personality to the human personality. Most people know what they want in a pet. One person wants an independent “I own you” pet, while the next person wants the sweet, quiet lapdog or cat.
Please use extra care in allowing your pet outside to do his business. This is a rough winter for human families. It is really tough for a lost animal to face the harsh winter weather, starvation and frostbite. Go outside with your dog and bring him back inside with you. Make sure your dog has an I.D.tag. Please keep your cats inside all the time.
All in all, it has been a very good week of nice things happening for our animals and for the shelter stability. Caribou Pet Rescue is located at 6 Richards Rd in Caribou. Mailing address is PO Box 488, Caribou, ME 04736 Neuter and Spay – It’s the ONLY Way.
Please continue to donate your returnable bottles and cans to Caribou Pet Rescue. Each week when I go to the 88 Bennett Drive Redemption, they have several envelopes waiting for CPR. This is a huge help and we are grateful to you.
Our Membership and Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Annual Meeting will be held on March 27th at 6 pm at the Gray Methodist Church in Caribou. The meal is free to current members, employees and active volunteers. Other guests are charged only $5.
