Construction giant needs skilled welders in Brewer
PRESQUE ISLE — Representatives of the Cianbro Companies are at the Career Center, located at 66 Spruce Street this week discussing career opportunities with people from across Aroostook County.

Officials with Cianbro are in Presque Isle this week interviewing workers recently laid off from local area mills, and other individuals from across Aroostook County who might put their skills to work at the company’s huge Brewer facility. Coordinating interviews at the Career Center are, from left, Gayleen Spooner, peer support worker with the Maine AFL/CIO; Mark Hovey, Cianbro’s manager of recruiting and hiring; and Alan Burton, Cianbro vice president of human resources, safety and health.
Cianbro, an employee-owned company with headquarters in the central Maine town of Pittsfield, is one of the East Coast’s largest construction, and construction services, companies. Cianbro currently employs approximately 2,300 people and is looking to add 400 people to its workforce in Maine.
Cianbro is known for its ability to construct large projects in Maine for export elsewhere. Most notably, the company completed two oil rigs in Portland Harbor for export to Brazil in 2004. Cianbro’s new Eastern Manufacturing facility in Brewer recently started working on its first project — fabricating huge, 1,000-ton sections of an oil refinery. To perform this project, over 50 of these large, modularized units will be barged from Cianbro’s Brewer facility, to Port Arthur, Texas, for final assembly.
Alan Burton, Cianbro vice president of human resources, safety and health, said that this approach to bring work back to Maine fits his company’s philosophy to help Maine people export their knowledge and skills. He also says the company is always looking for good people.
“We currently have several team members who are from Aroostook County,” he said. “Our experience is that County people have a good work ethic and can-do attitude. These qualities are important at Cianbro.”
Burton said that Cianbro has career opportunities across all construction trades at the Eastern Manufacturing facility in Brewer.
“We have an immediate need for pipe fitters, pipe welders, ironworkers, crane operators, and professional positions like safety specialist. We also have an in-house welding trainee program,” he said.
