ON A ROLL — Director Kermit McGary demonstrates to student Kim Grant how to do a proper roll. Southern Aroostook Community School music students are preparing for their spring concert scheduled for Thursday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Dyer Brook school.
In past years, the high school band has performed traditional concert music. This year, Director Kermit McGary has added stage band and percussion ensembles as well as an elementary/middle school chorus. Also, the high school band and the sixth grade band will be performing two musical numbers together.
McGary talked with high school band members earlier this year and asked what they wanted to do differently. Members requested the adding of different ensembles to their concerts. By adding the ensembles, high school band students are getting the opportunity to learn different instruments.Photo courtesy of SACS/Nate Goodall
KEEPING THE BEAT — Ryan Starbird, a band student at Southern Aroostook Community School, keeps the beat while waiting for his cue. The SACS music students are preparing for their May 8 spring band concert.
Some of the musical numbers that are being performed by the high school are “Night Train,” “California Dreamin’,” “Jamaican Sunrise,” “Fire the Torpedo” and “Piper’s Rhapsody.” The high school and sixth grade bands combined will perform “Chant and Celebration” and “Banuwa.” Chorus songs include “Say What,” “Yes or No,” and “Everyday Heroes.”
The concert is scheduled for Thursday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room at Southern Aroostook Community School in Dyer Brook. Donations, to benefit the band, will be accepted at the door.
