CLUB RECOGNIZED – The Washburn Trailrunners Snowmobile Club was recently named Club of the Year during a ceremony downstate. Pictured, from left: Trail Master Dave Moreau, Groomers Bill Pike and Rod Sperrey; Harvey Chesley, vice president of the Maine Snowmobile Association; Judy Green, member of the Board of Directors; and Alan Carter, president.
The club was recognized for their community involvement, well-groomed trail system and the over and above hospitality that greeted snowmobilers visiting their welcoming clubhouse.
It was also noted that over the last 10 years, Washburn Trailrunners has more than doubled their membership, currently making them the eighth largest snowmobile club in Maine. Not bad for a rural area competing with large cities. They were given credit for purchasing and renovating a fertilizer shed into a terrific clubhouse and getting a state-of-the-art groomer and very quickly paying for it in full!
The club kitchen rarely gets a rest with stew nights, public breakfasts and other club events held throughout the riding season. The club also supports the community of Washburn in very impressive ways. They offer a $500 scholarship each year, and contribute to the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Pine Tree Camp, the Red Cross, Project Graduation, the Washburn Fire Department and families in the community that have run into hard times.
The ambiance of the clubhouse was more than appreciated by well-known drivers including Andy Santerre and Jeffrey Earnhardt who commented on the niceness of the clubhouse during a visit this winter when the two took part in the Andy Santerre Sno Run to benefit AMHC. The clubhouse was even the scene of a marriage proposal from a groom-to-be from southern Maine who made a special trip to this area in order to propose to his future wife
Thanks for having such an impressive club and clubhouse. And thanks go out to all the volunteers who helped make this award possible, including but not limited to Trail Master Dave Moreau, Assistant Trail Master Carroll Sperrey, Allen Carter, Billy Pike, Rod Sperrey, Greg Sperrey, the kitchen crew: Mary Jane Sperrey, Dick and Audrey Hartford and volunteer Bill Sewall, along with all the other volunteers and supporters of this clubhouse.
The presentation of the award was made by Maine Snowmobile Club Association Vice President Harvey Chesley.
