AWARDED — These Greater Houlton Christian Academy students were recently named “Distinguished Christian High School Students.” The designation, similar to the National Honor Society, honors outstanding juniors and seniors attending member schools of the Association of Christian Schools International. It is given on the basis of academic performance, leadership, community involvement and faculty recommendations. Award winners are, from left: front, Britta Sjoberg, Jennifer Holcombe, Hannah Hiscoe; back, Kari Brewer, Kasi Parker, Kaitlyn Bell, Jordan McGuire and MacKenzie Burns.
The Distinguished Christian High School Student Award shall encourage the development of an intellectual and spiritual climate that will stimulate the growth of Christian character, foster academic scholarship, and promote biblical worldview thinking and acting in Christian youth of today.
The purpose for the involvement of Greater Houlton Christian Academy in the program of the Distinguished Christian High School Student is to recognize and encourage academic excellence, and demonstrated leadership among the most exceptional high school upperclassmen. ACSI selects students internationally and awards this distinguished honor to them in the spring of each school year.
Scholarship selections are based on academic performance, demonstrated leadership, community involvement, and recommendations from school personnel.
The following are the qualifications for selecting students for the DCHSS Award: the students selected must have a clear Christian testimony as a “Distinguished Christian” and must be juniors or seniors. The students selected must be in the top 10 percent of their class in one or more of the categories: Academics, Leadership, Fine Arts (Music, Art, Drama), Athletics, or Christian Service.
Students must have a minimum of two teacher recommendations and demonstrate a commitment to Christian service. They must be actively participating/involved in the categories they are chosen for (i.e., Leadership, Christian Service, Athletics, Fine Arts).
"I am deeply honored to recognize these students as some of the world's most outstanding Christian young people," Head of School Mark B. Jago stated. "The faculty and I extend our Academy's dedication to excellence to the Christian youth of today. We are grateful to be a part of this great program."
This Award is similar to the National Honor Society which recognizes middle and high school students who show achievement in scholarship, leadership, service, and character, but contrasts it in that it recognizes internationally only juniors and seniors within Christian schools worldwide and in the context of Christian service.
