CARIBOU — A former town manager was among those indicted by the Aroostook County Grand Jury during its May 9 session.     Darrell Williams, 53, of Monticello is facing one Class B count of theft by unauthorized taking. According to the indictment, the incident took place in Amity between 2005 and April 2007 when Williams did allegedly “commit theft by obtaining or exercising unauthorized control over money, property of the town of Amity, of a value of more than $10,000, with the intent to deprive the town of Amity of property.”
District Attorney Neale Adams declined to offer more specifics on the incidents surrounding the case, including how the money was taken and a more exact total of funds involved.
According to Amity’s Jan. 31, 2008 auditor’s report from Davis CPA of Presque Isle, a series of notes on the town’s financial statements indicates that “for the fiscal year ending Jan. 31, 2008, the town has recorded an amount due from a former employee of $43,410. This amount arises from improprieties noted in the bookkeeping practices of the former employee. Subsequent to the fiscal year end, the town will be taking the necessary steps to collect these funds.” Attempts to determine the identity of the former employee were not successful as of press time.
Williams resigned from his post as Amity town manager in April 2007 after roughly seven years on the job. Glendon Clifford, chairman of Amity’s Board of Selectmen at the time, said that Williams submitted his resignation during an annual performance review and a discussion of issues the board “was not satisfied with.” Williams had concurrently served as town manager in Oakfield, a job which he resigned from in 2006 in the wake of several conflicts, including issues with the town’s annual meeting and audit.
