A special luminary (candle lantern) ceremony will be held during the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life June 6 at Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle. The ceremony is meant to remember those lost to cancer and honor those who have survived. Luminaries will be lit at 9 p.m. to represent these individuals. “It will be beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track,” said Mike Hart, community executive for the American Cancer Society. “We hope to sell enough to light the entire area.”
Anyone desiring to purchase a luminary may do so by contacting the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345.
In addition, Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event. Teams of eight to 15 members will gather with tents and sleeping bags to join more than 4,800 communities nationwide that are hosting Relays. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of raising funds to help eliminate cancer.
Aroostook County’s cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) will kick off the Relay For Life June 6 at 6 p.m. with the official survivors’ lap; then the rest of the participants join the fun. For more information about cancer, or about purchasing a luminary, forming a team, or walking in the survivors’ lap, contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345, or online at www.cancer.org or www.relayforlife.org.
