The high school baseball and softball season is winding up with playoffs on the horizon.
In recent action, the Houlton Shiretowners defeated visiting Madawaska, 11-1 last Friday behind the one-hit effort of Ryan Hill and Porter Gervais.
Hill and Parker Brown supplied the offense each with a double, single and two RBIs. Hunter Caron doubled and singled, while Gervais added a pair of hits and knocked in a run.
Houlton improves to 5-6 on the season.
In girls’ softball play, the Houlton Lady Shires overtook visiting Madawaska, 13-1, as Nikki Eastman picked up the win last Friday.
Ericka Lackey, Brittany Guiod and Taylor Bailey came through at the plate each with a double and single in the five-inning win. Bailey also drove in two runs, while Lackey and Guiod each plated a run. Chelsi Murray and Eastman each singled twice and had two RBIs.
At Danforth, the East Grand Vikings edged the Hodgdon Hawks, 6-4.
The score went back-and-forth, as the Hawks led in the third, 2-1, but the Vikings took a 3-2 lead before Hodgdon reclaimed a 4-3 advantage in the sixth. But in the bottom of the frame, East Grand’s Andrew Gilman hit a two-run double to lift his team to victory.
Kaleb Dicker singled three times for the Vikings, while Kevin Campbell belted a two-run single in the fifth. Abe Brittain picked up the win, including striking out seven.
For Hodgdon, Travis Quint doubled and singled twice, while Jamie Ryan hit a double and single. Mike Brombose and Ryan combined for 11 strikeouts.
Last Tuesday, the Central Aroostook Panthers swept the host Hawks in a doubleheader, 13-3 and 13-2.
In the opener, Logan McCarthy, Logan McLaughlin and Mitch Folsom combined to one-hit the Hawks in five innings, as Ryan Wellington reached base for the Hawks on a run-scoring single.
McLaughlin doubled and drove in a run, while Manny Martinez hit a two-run single for the 7-3 Panthers.
In the next game, Wellington doubled for Hodgdon.
Will Delong and Folsom each belted run-scoring singles for CAHS.
The Hodgdon Lady Hawks slipped by East Grand in a slugfest, 18-16, as Amanda Ryan belted three doubles and scored three times for the winners.
Sam Lycette doubled twice and knocked in two runs, while Heather Rockwell doubled twice and brought in a run for the Lady Hawks.
For East Grand, Jackie Dodge doubled twice and had three RBIs, while Tisheena Roy collected three doubles and an RBI. Nikki Tuck had two doubles and plated two runs, as well.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Hawks split with visiting Central Aroostook of Mars Hill.
In the opener, the Lady Panthers scored eight runs in the top of the eighth to pull out a 23-15 win.
For Hodgdon, Destiny Ellis tripled, doubled and singled, while Rockwell collected four singles and Dayna Tidd two more in the losing effort.
For CAHS, Robyn Graham had three singles to drive in four runs and scored four times, while Sarah Long singled three times, doubled and had three RBIs. Rachel Donahue chipped in with two doubles.
In the second game, Hodgdon won a 30-27 slugfest, outhitting CAHS, 33-24.
Taylor McGary paced Hodgdon’s offense hitting the cycle, including a grand slam for seven RBIs. Rockwell hit five singles, while Lycette added four more for the winners.
For CAHS, Graham belted four singles for four RBIs, while Ashley Estabrook delivered two triples and two singles.
The Southern Aroostook Warriors shut out Washburn, 13-0 behind Tyler Robinson’s five-inning no-hitter, with 10 strikeouts.
Dakota Sleeper led the offense with two doubles and single to drive in run, while Stephen Grant singled twice and scored a run. The Warriors outhit the Beavers, 10-0.
Last Wednesday, the Warriors topped East Grand, 13-3, but the score was close through four innings, as Southern Aroostook held a 3-2 advantage. The Warriors broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, scoring eight runs.
Darin Flewelling popped a two-run homer to go with his two doubles, while Dillon Boulier singled twice and doubled for the winners.
For East Grand, Jordan Crone and Matt Steeves each singled.
The day before, the Warriors fell to visiting Ashland, 5-1.
The undefeated Hornets had a strong pitching performance from Jeremy Tarr, who threw a five-hitter, including nine strikeouts, two walks and two hit batsmen.
Cody Robinson led the Warriors with a double and single, while Flewelling doubled. Sleeper threw the complete game, striking out eight.
The Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors overpowered Washburn, 22-9, as Evangeline Goodall pitched a complete game win with 10 strikeouts. She helped her own cause with three singles and three RBIs.
Lauren McGary doubled twice and hit two singles for the winners, while Liz Goodall banged a two-run homer and two singles for the winners.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Warriors lost to visiting Ashland, 16-4 and Fort Fairfield, 19-5.
Against Ashland, Jasmine Rockwell singled and doubled, while Sara Crandall added a pair of hits. The Lady Warriors fell behind the undefeated Hornets, 12-1 after three innings and couldn’t recover.
In the next game against visiting Fort Fairfield, the Tigers took a 16-1 lead after three innings to bury SACS.
Liz Goodall finished with a solo blast and triple, while Kim Grant hit two singles.
The Shead Tigers overpowered visiting Greater Houlton Christian Academy, 13-3. The Tigers outhit the Eagles in the game, 11-0.
Last Tuesday, the Van Buren Crusaders defeated the visiting Eagles, 11-7. Chad Duff had three singles for the Eagles, who were outhit 16-6.
Last Wednesday, the Katahdin Cougars remained undefeated with a 4-3 win over Lee Academy.
Katahdin’s Andy Kay picked up the win, with 17 strikeouts and no walks, while scattering four hits.
Micah McGraw hit the winning run in the top of the sixth, as the Cougars led 3-2 in the fourth. The Pandas answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Guiggey and Kaleb Gallagher each singled for the 9-0 Cougars.
Last Tuesday, the Cougars blanked Schenck, 13-0 in five innings of play, as Brandon Robinson hurled a two-hitter with eight strikeouts. The Cougars scored all their runs in the first three innings.
Ethan Qualey led the offense with a home run and single to drive in three runs, while Kay doubled and singled to plate two runs. Josh McGraw and Gallagher each had a pair of singles for the winners.
On the softball diamond, the Lee Academy girls blanked Katahdin, 12-0, but the Lady Cougars toppled Schenck, 12-8 last Tuesday.
Against Lee, Jasmine Pelletier singled and tripled for Katahdin.
Pelletier led the way against Schenck with a two-run triple, while Melissa Duffy had two singles and a double to bring in two runs.
The Lady Cougars led 4-2 after three innings, and used back-to-back four run fourth and fifth innings to take the win.
