Youth receives new hand
Many will be happy to learn that Sean Daniels will soon be sporting a new bionic left hand. For those who didn’t know, Sean lost his left hand and part of his forearm in a harvest accident in October of last year. He recently returned from Bangor where he had lunch and was able to use his left hand in the process.
The iLIMB, which it is called, is an artificial hand that utilizes myoelectric technology to control the fingers, with electrical signals from the muscles of his remaining arm controlling movement of the prosthetic hand, much like a person’s regular hand. Chris Brydges, practice manager of the Bangor office of Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics Inc., who is a certified prosthetist/orthotist, spent this time with Sean practicing with the prosthetic device for several hours. The iLIMB has been available in this country only within the last year, and Sean is just the second person from New England to be fitted with the device. Brydges felt that Sean was a good candidate for the hand because of his determination to get back to his life and activities. He is also a muscular young man and quite able to take advantage of the myoelectric technology. His forearm and hand are being built and customized for him in California and he expects to be using it by mid-June, then he’ll be on the way to playing the sports he loves. We couldn’t be happier for him.

Visits
JoAnn Johnson, along with Vera Cullins, took the bus recently to travel south. Vera got off in Portland where she was met by her daughter, Gail Gentry and husband, Richard, and taken to their home in Saco. JoAnn traveled on to Somerset, Mass., to spend nearly two weeks with her daughter, Lori Silvia, husband, Derek, and their daughters, McKenna and Taylor. While there she attended the baptismal ceremony on May 25 of her granddaughter, McKenna, and was also able to attend Taylor’s first school play – her “Grand Show,” Taylor called it. JoAnn took the bus back to Bangor on a Saturday and spent the night with a friend, Peggy Culberson and Jason, and the next day she rode home with Terry and Paula White who had been spending some time down there. Vera was in Saco for 10 days and returned home with a sister-in-law, Alice Kinney, of Aboca, N.Y., and her daughter, Joyce Lyke. Alice came home to attend her 70th class reunion at Easton High School on Thursday evening, June 5.
Scott and Glenice Fuller, of Wells, were home last week and attended the graduation programs of the Class of 2008 and the Alumni Banquet.
Congratulations
Pete White is worried that he might go bankrupt now, as he had promised his granddaughter, Briana White, Greg and Marshelle’s daughter, $50 for getting on the dean’s list at the University of New England in Biddeford. Briana has made the dean’s list the last two semesters. Now Pete is in trouble as Briana’s sister, a senior at Easton Jr./Sr. High School, has earned the honor of being the valedictorian of this 2008 class and is reminding her grandfather that he also owes her. Pete considers it money well spent and is very proud of these girls.
Sympathy
Our sympathy goes out to Vera Driscoll on the death of her husband, 72-year-old Melvin Driscoll, of Easton, who passed away unexpectedly on June 2 at a Portland health care facility. Besides his wife, he leaves: a son, Jim Driscoll and family of Easton; a daughter, Laurie Driscoll, also of Easton; and a stepson, Stephen Condon. Melvin worked as a custodian at the University of Maine at Presque Isle until his retirement. A memorial service was conducted on Saturday, June 7, at the Pine Tree Baptist Church in Easton with Pastor Carlos daCruz and Pastor Steve Graham officiating. Interment took place at the Pine Tree Cemetery, Easton. A time of fellowship was held after the services at the church dining area. Those who wish may contribute in his memory to his wife at 639 Houlton Road, Easton, ME 04740.
