LIMESTONE – The Limestone/Maine School of Science and Mathematics softball club ended their pristine regular season 16-0 and number-two in the Eastern Maine Heal Points. With the playoffs beginning this week, the Eagles have their sights set on the 2008 Eastern Maine final, which could end up an Aroostook County standoff.

The Eagles came second to the Ashland Hornets who also remain undefeated at 15-0 due to strong pitching and batting. However, Limestone first must deal with either Jonesport or Katahdin in the quarterfinal.
“Any team in the tournament needs to be respected,” said head coach Brent O’Neal. “In a tournament game, anything can happen. Upsets occur. Based on records, Ashland, Bangor Christian, Woodland and Southern Aroostook seem the toughest.”
Success for the 2008 team has come, thus far, from the all-around strength of each player. “Our offense has been steady all year long, and our defense improved the second half of the season with our pitching becoming very consistent,” said O’Neal. “The team played and practiced well together, and focused on winning softball.”
Eagle baseball also secured a playoff position coming in at number seven in the Heal Points with an 11-5 record.
Senior Matt Enman continues to lead the team with a .571 batting average behind the plate and four wins on the pitcher’s mound. Matt Beaulieu has scored 24 runs for Limestone, and remained a steady-hitter with a .449 average.
