Easton volunteers continue working on food pantry plans

On Thursday evening, June 12, 18 citizens of Easton met at the Easton Elementary School library for another meeting on the upcoming food cupboard. Pastor Vaughn Martin chaired the meeting, explaining to the group more on the workings of the Friends Helping Friends pantry in Fort Fairfield where he and a few interested people went to watch and learn how the Fort Fairfield dispersing of food was carried on.

The Friends Helping Friends cupboard is housed in one end of a donated warehouse whose owner is footing the cost of electricity and heat. Pastor Martin was enthused by how things worked there. After explaining more about the cost and how to obtain the food and the need for volunteers to help with the sorting and packing the same, he turned the meeting over to Pastor Matthew Maxwell to explain the legal workings needed to open and run a food cupboard. After Pastor Matt got through with his explanations he invited those who would be interested in the official part of the plan, to pick officers and board members, to stay later for more discussion.
Ten attendees stayed, the others were willing to volunteer to help do the work needed to run this project, so they went home. Getting this project started was the main topic and it was believed that it would take from five to nine months to get all the legal paperwork done. The group was anxious to get right to work and so it was suggested that perhaps they could start sooner if they went under the Fort Fairfield program as an Easton Chapter of Friends Helping Friends, if this was acceptable to Fort Fairfield. Pastor Maxwell thought that it would be, as Fort has been very helpful in trying to get Easton’s project on track. They expect to put out mailers in the near future to promote the food cupboard, explaining who would be eligible and where to sign up.
Bryan Lawrence volunteered to be an acting chairman for at least the time needed to get things started, and Joe Lockhart said he would be the acting vice chairman. Lisa Guerrette volunteered as secretary and Harold Clark said he would act as treasurer at least for now. These people could legally be put into office later on, if so chosen. A special “Faith in Mission” church service will be held at the Easton Jr./Sr. High School on June 29, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
All of the local churches will give up their services to join together in this particular one. The offering on this day will go to purchase food for the “Faith in Mission” food cupboard. There will be more information later.
Organizations
Easton’s Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club met for their regular meeting on Thursday, June 12, with 18 members present. After a potluck dinner, President Marie Hewitt opened the meeting with the “Pledge of Allegiance” and the singing of “My Country Tis of Thee.” The planned speaker for the day was not able to attend. The treasurer, Lindy Fowler, called the role with these members present: Marie Hewitt, Lindy Fowler, Edith Fuller, Glenice Craig, Paul and Liana DeMerchant, Clair and Eldora Carter, Dottie and Duncan Beaton, Alene Embleton, Arlene Lander, Elizabeth Martin, Ezalee Smith, Ida Doak, Margery Niblet, Regina Thomas and Rena Richardson. She also reported that the town of Easton had contributed $1,000 to the group. The minutes of the last meeting was read by the secretary, Eldora Carter, and accepted. The president read a letter from the senior class at Easton Jr./Sr. High School thanking the Club for their donation to Project Graduation. Three more valances were purchased to match the others put up a while ago and the custodian of the manor, Bob Blanchard, put up the rods for the group. The president recognized the three men who were there as fathers for the upcoming Father’s Day Sunday. Ida Doak read a piece from the Wesleyan Sunday School paper, The Vista, entitled, “Laziness is a Virtue,” about how all the great inventions were made by people too lazy to do it manually. There was discussion about buying some new chairs to replace the old ones that remained in the recreation room. It was voted to buy one from Marden’s for this year. It will be similar to the ones that the club has already purchased, along the Canadian rocker style. It was also voted that the Club would continue holding two meetings a month as has been the habit. After the meeting was adjourned some members stayed to play games.
