HOULTON — Former town manager Darrell Williams has entered a plea of ‘not guilty’ to the charge of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.     Williams, 53, of Monticello was arraigned in Houlton Superior Court June 12 before Justice Kevin E. Cuddy, who approved an unsecured bond for Williams without any special conditions.
The Class B count of theft is being brought in connection with Williams’ former job as Amity town manager. He was indicted May 9 by the Aroostook County Grand Jury and according to the indictment did allegedly “commit theft by obtaining or exercising unauthorized control over money, property of the town of Amity, of a value of more than $10,000 with the intent to deprive the town of Amity of property.”
District Attorney Neale Adams has declined to release the exact amount believed to be involved in the alleged theft, but Amity’s January 2008 auditors report indicates the total may be over $40,000, an amount due “from a former employee” that arises from “improprieties noted in the bookkeeping practices of the former employee.”
Williams resigned from his post as Amity town manager in April 2007 due to issues the town’s Board of Selectmen were “not satisfied with.” Williams had, for a while, concurrently served as town manager in Oakfield; he resigned from that position in 2006.
