In last week’s softball playoff action, the No. 5 Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors were defeated 11-2 in Class D quarterfinal action against host Woodland. The No. 4 Dragons used an eight-run fourth inning, highlighted by Julie Nicholas’ three-run double to topple Southern Aroostook.
The Lady Warriors scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings, but couldn’t muster enough offense against Woodland’s Shelby Basset, who struck out 12 to earn the win.
Kim Geary singled twice and Lauren McGary doubled for the Lady Warriors. The Lady Warriors finish their season at 9-7.
In the preliminary round, the Lady Warriors overtook visiting Jonesport-Beals, 7-3.
Liz Goodall of Southern Aroostook hit a run-scoring double to spark a five-run first inning to set the tone for the game. The Lady Warriors held a 5-3 lead after the third and added two more runs in the sixth for the win.
Sara Crandall and Janel Rockwell each singled twice for the winners.
In other preliminary action, the Katahdin Lady Cougars ended their season with a 13-8 loss to Jonesport-Beals.
The Katahdin girls tied the game at 8-all in the sixth, but the Royals’ Brandee Beal (three singles) hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to spark her team to victory.
The Lady Cougars led 6-3 in the third only to see Jonesport-Beals rally in the fourth to take an 8-6 lead before the game was tied.
Danni Beth Cyr led Katahdin’s offense with a double and a pair of singles to drive in three runs, while Jasmine Pelletier tripled and singled twice.
The Hodgdon Lady Hawks pulled off a 19-16 slugfest against their preliminary opponent Washburn.
The Lady Beavers led 13-8 in the fourth, but Hodgdon combined for seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to overtake Washburn, 15-13 en route to the win.
Jessica Guy led Hodgdon with three singles to knock in five runs, while Heather Rockwell tripled twice to drive in two runs.
But, Bangor Christian cut down the Lady Hawks, 23-0, in the Class D quarterfinals last Thursday.
Bangor Christian’s Jillian French and Monica Alexander combined to no-hit Hodgdon in the shutout, as the pitching duo struck out 11, allowing four walks – of which Hodgdon’s’ Sam Lycette was the recipient of three of those walks — and giving up no runs.
Hodgdon finishes the year at 7-11.
