Who do we break for?
NOBODY!
80 matches won,
CHS tennis serves perfect season
The Caribou 5-0
It was a dream season that began with coach John Habeeb at the team’s very first meeting claiming this team should go the year at 5 and 0 every match. Hearing this, I though it’s good to have high hopes, and left it at that. As mid-season arrived, some of the players began counting and the belief started to grow. It was now approaching playoff time, and the record was intact.
A sense of pride grew within the whole team, and a new before match ritual began; it was called the rock. At this large rock in the Caribou park, the boys would form a huddle to gather the team’s focus. Then a slogan developed – “Who do we break for? Nobody!” This pre-match huddle and slogan continued through the playoffs and into the first successful Eastern Maine title ever for the CHS boys on Wednesday.
Several of the players reminded the parents that this was not done yet. The State title was in sight just three days ahead. So off the team went to Lewiston to meet with Falmouth, State champs for two of the past three years with the number-two player in the state at the helm. That was not to deter the Caribou 5-0. They had the huddle and the cheer – “Who do we break for? Nobody!”
That day their team spirit and focus carried them to a perfect season of 80 matches and 0 losses, and to CHS’s first boys’ tennis State Championship. Congratulations to you as individual players, the team and coach John Habeeb who has held this dream for his boys for 21 years. Thank you for the great season.
