PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The Wintergreen Arts Center is looking to make those “What I Did on My Summer Vacation” essays a little more interesting with exciting trips to the final frontiers of space, the inner workings of a candy factory, the distinctive beauty of ancient Japan, and beyond! Area children will be able to embark on these journeys through a weeklong series of summer day camps running from Aug. 4-8. Day camps will include themed projects that will allow participants to explore their sense of expression, socialize with their peers, and learn new techniques such as bookbinding, printmaking, and origami. There will be two sessions each day: morning (9 a.m.-noon) for children in grades K-3, and afternoon (1-4 p.m.) for those in grades 4-7. Each of these camps will cost $95 per child.
For students in grades 7-8, Wintergreen will also be offering a weeklong fine drawing camp. Students will work closely with experienced artists to practice fundamentals such as composition, perspective, line quality, and light/shadow. This session will run Aug. 11-15 from noon-3 p.m., with a cost of $105 per student. This session will also be open for grades 9-12 Aug. 11-12 for $40 per student. Registration forms for all camps are available at the Presque Isle Parks and Recreation Department, Turner Memorial Library, and the Aroostook Centre Mall service desk. Those interested must register by July 1 by mailing their completed form to Molly Hamel at 339 State St., Presque Isle, Maine 04769. Molly will also be happy to field any questions by phone at (207) 227-5292.
The Wintergreen Arts Center is in its second year of providing quality arts education to patrons of all ages in Aroostook County. The center is largely volunteer-based, utilizing local artists as instructors in a variety of artistic disciplines. This will be Wintergreen’s first summer offering day camps, and the Center hopes that the courses will serve as a much needed relief for families during the dog days of August.
Wintergreen provides classes at all levels, as well as seasonal events and birthday party services. Its mission is to provide an atmosphere rich in the creative arts for the residents of and visitors to Aroostook County.
