Aroostook Football

To the editor:
I am writing in regards to The Aroostook Football League and the shameful way the Presque Isle Zoning Board has treated the organization. It is my understanding from talking with many residents of Presque Isle that not that many years ago, the same sort of situation existed with the hockey team. Is Presque Isle unable to learn from the past?     My family moved to this area from Texas in June of 2005. My children were disappointed that the high school did not offer football. One of the first events we attended was The Northern Maine Fair. At the Fair, we met Stu Wyckoff at the football team’s booth. My son was very excited and joined immediately. Though it may sound stereotypical, in Texas football was our passion!
Stu Wyckoff, Dick Engels and Shawn Washington made a huge impact on my son’s life. By offering positive feedback these men became spectacular role models. My son, as we would say in Texas, is “ornery”, and he was a challenge to Stu, Dick and Shawn. These men were up to the challenge and poured their hearts into each and everyone of the kids.
The first year my son was physically challenged, not only by his coaches and teammates, but by asthma. My son’s last year of football, his health and stamina had improved greatly, directly related to his training during the season as well as the off season.
The football team was not only good for my son, but my daughter as well. My daughter worked as a volunteer with Dawn Washington and other parents to run the concession stand. It was that opportunity that allowed my daughter to develop skills such as communication, coordinating the food service, as well as getting her out into the fresh air with the players. Dawn was considered by all the kids as “Mom”.
We cannot forget John DeFelice who helped keep statistics, or Linda Milligan taking on any job from line marker to concession stand.
The “Football Years” are fondly remembered at our home. We still recall the players by their last names and nick names … “remember that tackle by Harris!, or “how about that run by Jonesy?”, or “Hank made an awesome play!”. When we see Stu or Dick around town, or any one of the many adults associated with the Aroostook Football League, they continue to offer support.
The lessons of football do not stop on the field. “The harder we work … the luckier we get” isn’t just a motto, it is a way of life. Go team go!
