Erika Hale, a native of Caribou, was one of two applicants selected from more than 20 applicants for a $500 scholarship from OMNE (Organization of Maine Nurse Executives). OMNE/Nursing Leaders of Maine provides scholarships for Maine nursing students attending a Maine nursing program. Hale is currently attending school at the University of Southern Maine in the intensive and accelerated nursing program. Presenting the award was Bonnie Deveau, RN, MA, NE-BC, executive director of inpatient services at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

OMNE/Nursing Leaders of Maine provides scholarships for Maine nursing students attending a Maine nursing program. The program recognizes and assists nursing students in their academic endeavors. The scholarship is provided for use by deserving nursing students who are pursuing a bachelors or higher degree in nursing.
Hale learned of this scholarship opportunity by searching on the Internet for nursing scholarships.
A committee established by OMNE/Nursing Leaders reviews and ranks each application, based on academic achievement and letters of recommendation. She was required to complete an application and coordinate letters of reference as well as academic achievements.
Hale graduated from the University of Maine, Orono in 2004 with a bachelor of science degree in communication sciences and disorders. She relocated to Boston and worked at the Massachusetts General Hospital as a vascular specialist where she scheduled patients for testing and interacted with clinical staff. It was the exposure to this clinical environment that inspired Hale to re-evaluate her professional goals and convinced her to return to Maine to pursue a career as a nurse.
Hale currently resides in Portland and works for Maine cardiology Associates. She is enrolled in the intensive and accelerated nursing program at the University of Southern Maine where she will complete her studies in one year.
