FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Five athletes competed for the annual Potato Blossom Festival Triathlon title by participating in the Potato Blossom Five-Mile Road Race, Regatta on the Aroostook and the Spud Cycle Classic Bike Race. Brent Jepson was the overall winner in a time of 2:42:29 followed by Tom Towle in second place at 2:42:57. In third place was Rob Langner in 3:13:30, and in fourth was Andy Coiley in 3:23:57. The overall winner in the women’s division was Frances Prest in a total time of 3:06:42.Maine Potato Blossom Five Miler
Five Miler expert Art Thompson, a 34 year race veteran, joined the 64 athletes racing in the 34th annual Maine Potato Blossom Festival event. Thompson won in the men’s 70 and over division. Overall men’s winner was Judson Cake setting a new course record at 25:34. Overall women’s winner was Angela Ewings at 35:10. Bill Flannery and Jeannine Towle crossed together at the top of the walkers in 58:18.
Female winners by age group were Jordann Coiley (14 and under), Jessica Caron (15 to 18), Shannon Mountain (19 to 29), Rene LaLiberty (30 to 39), L. Mountain (40 to 49), Connie McLellan (50 to 59) and Darlene Higgins (60 and over).
Male winners by age group were Evan Graves (19 to 29), Alfred Hanscom (30 to 39), Jeff Ashby (40 to 49), Brent Jepson (50 to 59) and Waldo Libby (60 to 69).

Regatta on the Aroostook
The annual Regatta on the Aroostook canoe and kayak race was held on Saturday with 80 participants paddling the 6.5-mile course down the Aroostook River. The overall race winners were Fred Ludwig and Steve McAleer in a pro-boat canoe with a time of 48:13 followed by Clint Cushman and Crystal Nason in a time of 51:40, also in a tandem race canoe.
The recipient of the new 169 Old Town Canoe drawn as a door prize from all who registered was Zach Worcester.
The Regatta was sponsored by the Fort Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department, Kayak Country and Northpoint Mortgage.

Bicycle events
Forty-two cyclists participated in the 2008 Spud Cycle Classic on Sunday. Fort Fairfield’s Brendan McLaughlin escaped from the three-strong lead pack for first place in the 23-mile race in 1:00:13. Roger Doucette (Glenburn) finished second and Devin Higgins (Presque Isle) finished third. Stephanie Caverhill (Mars Hill) finished in third.
Age group winners were McLaughlin (men’s 15 to 29), Kelsey Towle (women’s 15 to 29), Matt Michaud (men’s 30 to 39), Caverhill (women’s 30 to 39), Doucette (men’s 40 to 49), Frances Prest (women’s 40 to 49), Stephen Higgins (men’s 50 to 59) and Marcel Bastide (men’s 60 to 69).
The 12-mile teen race was won by Josh Doody and Jordann Coiley.
