CRX news
Even though water-levels had dropped substantially from the previous weeks of summer, the rivers and streams continued to be a favorite destination for the participants of the CRX program. After completing the second week of kayaking, participants were able to paddle almost the entire Madawaska Lake Stream Watershed. Additionally, they paddled the Aroostook River from Washburn to Presque Isle, and extended the trip to the end of the Gardner Creek Road. The longer trips allowed the group to enjoy seeing new sections of the river.
Last Wednesday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service joined the group in a paddle from Dube Pit to the Madawaska River Dam. The group learned about the work of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and about the ecosystem surrounding a stream.
Through a donation from ‘Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs’ the kids had an opportunity to try their luck fishing out of a kayak.
County athletes head to Hershey
Once again Aroostook County will send the majority of the Maine contingent to the North American finals of the Hershey Track and Field Program. Northern Regional Meet Director Kathy Mazzuchelli, from the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department, announced last Thursday that Molly Anthony of Bridgewater, Taylor Williams of Presque Isle, Brandon Theriault of Fort Kent and Holden Turner of Easton will join Tia Jackson of Old Town for the trip to Hershey, Penn. July 31 to August 2.
Anthony will compete in the 50-meter run. Theriault and Williams will compete in the softball throw. Second-time North American finalist Turner will compete in the standing long jump.
The Hershey Track and Field Program was devised in 1975 by Dr. Donald P. Cohen of Charleston, S.C. to promote physical fitness and participation in athletics to the youth of North America. Dr. Cohen and Hershey Foods Corporation stressed the importance of highlighting participation, learning, enjoyment and physical exercise in the program.
Mazzuchelli noted that thousands of boys and girls aged 9 to 14 participate in local programs across North America, but only 500 end up at the North American finals. Representatives to the event come from every state and every Canadian province. The five representatives from Maine will join the other participants in an all-expense-paid trip, which includes transportation, lodging, a day at Hershey Park, a tour of the Hershey Chocolate Factory, a world class track and field meet and an awards banquet with the opportunity to meet former and potential Olympic athletes.
Mazzuchelli credits all the recreation departments across Aroostook County for supporting local programs for the result of the County sending the largest delegation to the state meet in central Maine.
