The two stores collected over 50 cases of popcorn and over 60 DVDs, which will be sent to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Fourteen Movie Gallery video and game rental stores throughout the region have been collecting donations of popcorn and DVDs to send to troops located in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Sharon Anderson, manager of the Caribou store, said she got the idea for “DVDs for Our Troops” because of her son, Patrick Lausier, who is currently involved in junior basic training.
“The idea started here, and then our district manager coordinated the whole thing, getting the other stores involved,” Anderson said.
Throughout the month of July customers were able to purchase bags of popcorn to be sent to the troops. Customers who bought four bags received a small American flag for free. Customers were also able to buy DVDs from the store and donate them to the cause, or could bring in their own movies from home.
The National Guard will be picking up the movies and popcorn and will be distributing them to the troops this month.
Anderson says that approximately 60 DVDs were donated in the Caribou store, alone. About 56 cases of popcorn were donated between the Caribou and Presque Isle stores, and around 100 were collected throughout the entire region.
Anderson says the stores will continue to take DVD donations through the year to ship overseas. The stores will also be doing more fundraisers throughout the year, such as a bake sale on Labor Day, to help out other organizations.
