Van Buren native joins clinical faculty

    Biddeford – Joy (Ouellette) Palmer, D.O., University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine graduate, has accepted a clinical faculty position at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Va.     In July 2000, Palmer began studying osteopathic medicine at the University of New England’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, after completing her undergraduate studies in biomedical sciences at Marquette University in Milwaukee. Palmer extended her educational training at UNE with a pre-doctoral fellowship in osteopathic manipulation and anatomy. As a Fellow, she helped teach the osteopathic principles and practices class and the medical gross anatomy course while concurrently seeing her own patients in the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Clinic situated on campus.
    After graduating from UNE in 2005, Palmer began her residency in neuro-musculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine at the University of New England. This three-year specialty training began with an internship year at Mercy Hospital in Portland and two years as a resident physician at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, and in the outpatient Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Center in Saco. During her residency, Palmer was awarded an American Osteopathic Association Research Fellowship award for the design and implementation of a study investigating the effect of osteopathic manipulation in the management of angina. The results of this study will be presented at a research seminar in Nevada later this year.
    In April 2008, Palmer was recognized by the New England Osteopathic Medical Education Network (NEOMEN) for a case study presentation at their annual research forum. During her training, Palmer has also completed a manuscript entitled, “Research Manual for Residents: A guide for the path less traveled.”
    A native of Van Buren, Palmer currently resides in Saco with her husband and two sons. She is the daughter of Lucien and Rachel Ouellette of Van Buren. Her clinical faculty position at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Va. begins September 1. Palmer’s responsibilities will include teaching the medical students, seeing patients as an osteopathic manipulative medicine specialist and conducting research pertaining to osteopathic manipulation.
