For the second time in a week, the Houlton and Madawaska varsity soccer teams squared off against each other. The Lady Shires were ousted by the Owls Friday after having won their initial battle seven days earlier, while the Houlton boys were much more competitive the second time around but still were defeated. CROSSING — Senior Ashir Abouleish boots the ball across mid field and to the right side of the field to set up a scoring opportunity for the Shires. Houlton dropped at 1-0 decision to the Madawaska Owls, their second loss in a week to their rivals from the St. John Valley.
Ashley Cyr scored a pair of goals and assisted on a third by teammate Meagan Ouellette as Madawaska took a 3-1 decision in a match played on the Owls’ home field.
Chelsi Murray managed Houlton’s lone goal, which came unassisted in the first half.
Goalkeeper Abby Kinens saved six of 16 shots in goal for the Lady Shiretowners, while the Owls’ sister tandem of Stephanie and Amanda Nadeau collaborated for seven saves on 13 shots.
In the boys’ rematch, this time held at Houlton, the Shiretowners allowed a goal by Shawn Parker with 18 minutes and 7 seconds to play in regulation to break a scoreless tie and send Madawaska to a 1-0 verdict, spoiling the Shires’ home opener.
The game marked a big improvement for Houlton, which had fallen to the Owls in the first meeting, 5-0.
Christian Lizotte provided the assist on the game-winning goal for Madawaska, which moved to 4-0 with the win.
Ryan VanBusKirk came up with nine saves on 10 shots in goal for the Shires, while Madawaska’s Nate T. Beaulieu had five saves.
The Houlton boys host Fort Kent tonight at 6 p.m. and both the girls and boys travel to Caribou to take on the Vikings Friday. The girls game kicks off a 5 p.m., followed by the boys matchup at 7 p.m.
The Southern Aroostook Warrior boys took Easton to overtime Friday, but lost a 2-1 decision. Bradley Trask had the game-winning goal off a Jonah Bacon assist with 1:17 to play in the second overtime session.
Trask had also put Easton on the board first before SA knotted the score on an unassisted tally by Patrick Goodall with 15:05 left in regulation. Dillon Boulier had a busy day in goal for the Warriors, turning aside 14 of 28 attempts fired his way by the Bears.
Cody Thompkins saved 10 of 23 shots for Easton, which moved to 4-0 on the campaign.

The SA boys squad recorded a 7-0 victory as Tyler Robinson notched a hat trick and four teammates netted a goal apiece in the shutout. Boulier stopped all four shots he faced as the Warriors were successful in their season-opening match.
Dan McGillicuddy saved 17 of 25 shots in goal for Hodgdon, which also was playing its opener.
In the girls game held that same afternoon, the Warriors made Holly Vining’s coaching debut a successful one behind two goals off the foot of Rochelle Nadeau as SA prevailed, 5-1.
Jasmine Rockwell, Elizabeth Goodall and Brittany Charette were other goal scorers for the Lady Warriors, with Emily Cummings saving 10 of 14 shots to gain the victory in goal.
Karriann Estabrook had the lone goal for coach Olin Quint’s Hodgdon squad. Emmaly Jurson faced 22 shots and turned aside 10 for the Lady Hawks.
Southern Aroostook has home contests scheduled against Central Aroostook today and Easton Friday. Both are scheduled to get under way at 3:30 p.m. The Hodgdon squads entertain Easton at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon before hosting Fort Fairfield Tuesday, also at 3:30 p.m.
In varsity golf action Friday, Katahdin was 40 strokes better than Fort Fairfield in a match played at Va Jo Wa Golf Course in Island Falls.
Josh Guiggey of the Cougars was the medalist with a score of 45. Evan McCarthy came in with a 49, while Andrew Hawkins and Lucas Craig carded 50s. Brandon Robinson (55), Chris Clukey (55) and Cody Cunningham (57) also competed for Katahdin, which was playing its first match of the fall.
Josh Churchill scored a 50 for the Tigers’ low round of the match.
