PRESQUE ISLE – The American Cancer Society’s sixth annual Northern Maine Living With Cancer Conference, scheduled Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in the Edmunds Center of Northern Maine Community College, is a free, daylong program for cancer patients, family members, caregivers, and health care professionals.     “This event is about providing support, community, and hope for those who have been touched by cancer,” said Doug Dieckmann of the American Cancer Society. “This year’s theme, ‘Tools to Survive and Thrive,’ is designed to provide participants with information on a variety of personal and medical topics.”
Kathleen G. Higinbotham from the National Institutes of Health joins the conference this year to discuss “What’s on the Horizon For Cancer Research.” Higinbotham worked as a biologist at the National Cancer Institute for more than 13 years in the research areas of tumor biology and kidney biology. Her interests have focused on cellular and molecular biology over the years, and she has worked on oncogenes, as well as tumorigenesis. Her present position with the National Institutes of Health deals with technology transfer. She is a cancer survivor, and has served as a past member of the American Cancer Society board of directors in Maryland.
Other speakers include Dr. Daniel Reinke, a three-year cancer survivor and family physician; and Dawn Poitras will show participants light stretching exercises. Workshops include Art as Healer, Music Therapy, Food Can Be Good, and Reiki/Acupunc-ture.
The conference is presented in collaboration with Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C.A.N.C.E.R.) and is made possible through the generosity of the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing, Lymphedema Association of Maine, and TAP Pharmaceuticals.
