UMPI women win 2 in Powerade event

    PRESQUE ISLE — Freshman Carmen Allen scored 14 minutes into the second half, breaking a 1-1 tie and leading UMPI past Lyndon State College of Lyndonville, Vt., 3-2, in day two of the Powerade Tournament Sunday, capping a perfect weekend for the Lady Owls.

    The goal by Allen, from Presque Isle, was unassisted. With less than three minutes to go in the game, teammate Erin Pelletier put the Lady Owls up, 3-1, before Lyndon State cut the deficit to one with just 47 seconds to play.
    Desiree Smith put UMPI on the board first with a goal off an Erin Pelletier assist 13:27 into the contest. Naomi White scored the equalizer 15 minutes later for Lyndon State.
    Carolynn Tuck had nine saves in goal for the Lady Owls, while Natalia Shams turned away 10 shots in goal for Lyndon State.
    In Saturday’s match, UMPI bested Thomas College of Waterville, 2-1, with Pelletier notching both goals for the Lady Owls. The first was unassisted in the first half, while the second broke a 1-1 tie with just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation and came off an Olivia Jameson assist.
    Julia Nyitray scored the lone Thomas goal. Tuck had two saves and the Lady Terriers’ Lindsay Gove had 14.
    The UMPI men went 1-1 on the weekend. They were beaten by Lyndon State Sunday, 3-0. Darren Roberge netted a hat trick for the winners. Ian Oliver picked up the shutout in goal with three saves.
    Richard Felbaum saved five shots in goal for the Owls.
    Against Thomas College on Saturday, Devon Peaslee scored the only goal of the game three minutes into the second half as UMPI prevailed. Felbaum had five saves for UMPI and Keegan Curtin of Thomas totaled seven saves in the match.
    UMPI players making the all-tournament team were, on the women’s side, Smith, Pelletier and Allen, and for the men, Corey Harding, Corey Fournier and Ben Costello.
    The Owl squads are back in action on Saturday with Homecoming matches against Maine Maritime Academy. The women’s game begins at noon, followed by the men’s contest at 2 p.m.
