Special to the Aroostook Republican
It has seemed a long journey with the three litters of baby kittens that have been fostered by mother cat, Sage, and mother cat, Barbara, and this Milton household. I was pleased to see Barbara and five kittens go to the shelter for continuing care this week. This left Sage and me to tend 10 babies with the help of neutered Uncle Bob and un-neutered cousin Nolan. We are a mixed group of campers and the relationship with the mother cat improved considerably with the decreased responsibility.
Mother Sage is a complacent, healthy and happy momma at Caribou Pet Rescue. On Monday, 9/22, the remaining 10 babies and Sage will be transferred into other foster environments. The babies will continue be well cared for in a home environment and then will be placed up for adoption at 8 weeks of age. Sage will have a chance to be loved and cared for in a warm home environment as she weans her youngsters. Sage was obviously an extremely loved housecat at some time in her life. Her quiet, calm, clean manners tell of a good life until she became pregnant. Sage will be available for adoption from CPR once she has weaned the babies and has had time to be spayed and recovered. Call CPR at 498-3800. Volunteers, direct care and comfort care, are always needed.
Mother Sage is a complacent, healthy and happy momma. She knows that if any of the other foster cats would consider hurting one of the infants, one look from her will curtail that thought. Tomorrow the remaining litters and Sage will be transferred into other foster environments. I look forward to them going into a more normal environment with interaction into a regular family life. The babies will be well care for and Sage will have a chance to be loved and cared for in a warm home environment. Sage was obviously an extremely loved housecat at some time in her life. Her quiet, calm, clean manners tell of a good life until she became pregnant.
I was saddened to see Nolan go to the shelter. It was his time to be neutered and placed up for adoption. Nolan is one very special cat and I hope he will quickly find a great home. I will miss his adorable, loving personality.
October is the national “Adopt a Dog” month. We are celebrating early with a huge discount of 75% off every dog in the shelter except for the little puppy. The canine adoption fee is only a $25.00 per dog. We have some great ones. If you are considering a new dog, this is a good time to add a loving pet to your family and save yourself a good chunk of change.
We welcome Laurie Bouchard-Clark to our shelter staff. Laurie is coming on as vet-tech manager and we are delighted she has chosen to give her compassionate heart and talents to the animals at Caribou Pet Rescue.
Upcoming events at the shelter or for the shelter: We plan to host another microchip clinic in the very near future. The cost per pet is only $15.00 a huge savings from typical medical charges. I had my pets done and they never even knew it happened. I now have the comfort of knowing we have done everything we can to help them if they should ever get out of the house and become lost. Although our cats don’t go outside, except in their gated pen, accidents can happen especially when friends come to visit.
Tent Sale: We will be moving our tent sale in the near future to the Valley Flea Market located on the Access Highway across from the Crown Park Inn. Some of you will remember this as the former Agway building years ago. The Valley Flea Market will run all winter on weekends and CPR will have tables utilizing an honor system with a donation box available for your purchases. We are currently in need of people to help us get set up and organized at the new site. If you can help, please call the shelter at 498-3800.
Caribou Pet Rescue will host a booth at the Caribou Arts and Crafts Show. We are looking for donations of all types of crafts and also for home baked goods. Please call the shelter and leave your name and message for Paula DeMerchant as chair of the fair. We will also need extra people to staff our booth.
We are currently setting up elementary education classes for this fall and early winter for grades K-3. Our pet care classes are scheduled for 10 am on Wednesday mornings and structured for the age of the students. If you would like to have CPR visit your classroom, please give us a call.
Returnable bottles: continue to spay/neuter many precious animals. The 88 Bennett Drive Redemption continues to pass on your donation as well as your wonderful comments. Thanks so much for your support.
