It comes as no surprise that the number of local families served at the Caribou Ecumenical Food Pantry, located on Center Street in Caribou,(the back of the old Powers Theatre building) has shown a marked increase during 2008. During the first eight months of this year, the facility has served 582 families, compared to 363 during the same period in 2007. Due to this steadily increasing number of families in need of this type of assistance, the board of the Caribou Ecumenical Food Pantry has reviewed this issue and recently voted to add the first Saturday of the month to its’ operating schedule. The first day for distribution from the pantry will be Saturday, Oct. 4.
“With this decision, we are hoping to help those working families who cannot access the pantry because of their daily schedules,: stated Jessica Feeley, the pantry’s coordinator. “We (the board) discussed several alternatives and it was decided that this would be the simplest to implement,” she added.
The Ecumenical Food Pantry will follow its regular procedures, accepting calls at 493-4860 between 10 to 11 a.m., with pick-ups scheduled from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
All callers must be residents of Caribou, Connor, Perham, Wade, Washburn or Woodland and must also meet LIHEAP eligibility guidelines.
