To the editor:
On Sept. 20, we had our first Presque Isle Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk that went very well. We were able to raise thousands of dollars from generous sponsorships and donations.
The money raised will provide national and local education and outreach to prevent suicide. Thank you so much to everyone who walked; you truly are helping to make a difference!
I would also like to thank our generous Platinum sponsor, AMHC; our gold sponsor, Houlton Wal-Mart; and our bronze sponsor, University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Thank you also to the individuals and organizations who donated in-kind items: Citadel Communications, County Physical Therapy, G-Force Laser Tag, Houlton Farms, Jacob Aviation, Katahdin Trust Co., Lowe’s, McDonald’s, Mojo’s, Morning Star Art and Framing, Northeast Publishing, Presque Isle Country Club, Subway, S. W. Collins and WUPI FM.
Thank you to all the volunteers: Sarah Coffin, Larry French, Dan Patterson, Chris Ramsey, Michelle Reinecke, Lily Searles, Scott Searles, Brenda Sherwood, and Rhoda Freeman (Maine director of the AFSP) and Bob Freeman who traveled up from Portland to help.
Thank you also to the businesses who made donations: Aroostook Real Estate, North Country Auto, Northeastland Hotel, Stew’s Sight and Sound, and York’s of Houlton. And thank you, Patty and staff for the space at the Aroostook Centre Mall.
As a reminder: Donations will be collected until Dec. 31, 2008; please go to www.outofthedarkness.org or mail donations directly to: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 120 Wall Street 22nd Floor, New York, N.Y. 10005.
