Committee makes donation
The Westfield Jubilee Committee, as part of its Jubilee Days events, decided to give to a charity in the local area. Catholic Charities was the charity of choice and so, as part of the Westfield Jubilee Days, donations were collected and the proceeds from those donations, were given to the organization.
Dixie Shaw, on behalf of Catholic Charities, was presented with a check for $200 by the Committee. Catholic Charities not only works so hard to help ‘Feed the County,’ but also helps provide for others in times of need, such as flood victims in Fort Kent this spring. The organization gratefully accepts donations of non-perishable food items, money or household items (other than clothing). The Committee wishes to thank all who help make the collection a success.

The special speaker was Dr. William Bergen, who spoke of the five years that he, his wife, Mary, and daughter, Jayne, spent in Alaska. Planning on spending a year, they ended up staying from 1991 – 1996 in the Bethel, Alaska area. The people in this area lived a very nomadic lifestyle, as there was limited access in this tundra landscape and few roads.
The people spent their summers catching and saving enough salmon to keep them through until spring. In the spring, they would hunt for seal. Shore birds and berries were also on their menu when they were available. Caribou was sometimes eaten, but the people had to travel a long way to find any. The people would share their catches with each other.
The Bergens showed a number of items that they brought back from Alaska with them, from practical mittens and boots, to baskets, fans and dolls.
