Scouts on the road
Boy Scouts and leaders from Washburn’s Troop 177 went to Trafton Lake in Limestone for the annual North Star District Fall Camporee. Washburn was one of several units attending the weekend event and our boys earned third place for the campsite inspection as well as other individual awards.
Troop 177 was joined by Webelos from Cub Pack 162 of Washburn and shared the camping experience.
Scouts attending included: Keagan Page, Adam Wilcox, Curtis Thompson, Nicholas Gumprecht, Christopher Hartman, Taylor Skinner, Daniel Roy and Stephen Kinney along with Scoutmaster Larry Harrison and Assistant Leaders Donald Wilcox and Greg Page.
Troop 177 was also very busy on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they hosted their sponsor, Washburn Rotary Club members, for their annual Dutch oven cook-off. This was a special thank you for the Rotary who has sponsored this troop for 43 years.
This year the supper menu consisted of several tasty items, including: roast beef, sparkling potatoes, chili with biscuits, the “chicken thing,” apple and blueberry cobbler. As usual the meal was great, and all items were cooked in Dutch ovens, a feat the troop has mastered over the years.
Those attending were Rotary members: Mike Umphrey, Dennis Harris, Kermit Fuller, Stewart and Barbara Turner, Cindy Richendollar, Steve Bodi, Elizabeth White and Andy White Sr.
Scouts attending were: Curtis Thompson, Kody Brissette, Andrew White Jr., Keagan Page, Taylor Skinner, Stephen Kinney and Daniel Roy. Leaders attending were: Scoutmaster Larry Harrison, Greg Page, Ronald Rand, Mike Thompson, Donald and Pam Wilcox. The group also recognized that it was Andy White Sr’s birthday, and all sang “Happy Birthday” to him. The boys also led the Rotary in a rendition of the action-packed jellyfish song and Curtis Thompson gave a rundown of what the troop had done over the past year. At the closing, it could truly be said that a good time was had by all.

Rec Center senior citizens
On Wednesday, Sept. 24, 19 area senior ladies accompanied Washburn’s recreation director, Marcie Barbarula, on a field trip to WAGM-TV. Their tour guide was Dick Palm and the ladies saw John Gulliver as well.
They saw the technical end of television, and some commented on how modern it was and how they each had a hard time programming VCRs and taping shows! They got to see the set for the “Potato Picker’s Special” show and had their photo taken on the set of the nightly news.
After the tour of the station, the ladies journeyed to Bonanza for lunch, commandeering most of the back dining room. They were joined by Marcie and bus driver Mike Umphrey. Also riding to Presque Isle to pick up his bus was George Seward, who enjoyed the ladies’ company.
Those attending included: Gwen Bragg, Evelyn Woodman, Fran Dickinson, Bernadette Rossignol, Lorraine Harrison, Audrey Pavlick, Arlene Cole, Eunice Carman, Norma Baker, Anita Tarr, Peggy Sperrey, Glenna Ewing, Glenna Bragg, Barb Churchill, Drucilla Turner, Wilda Goodall, Sylvia Wardwell, Marilyn Whitten and Margaret Barker.

Reunion of the cousins
During the past month, several cousins have been visiting the County and enjoyed reminiscing about times past. The first one coming home was Burton Kierstead who currently lives in North Carolina and came to Caribou to celebrate his high school reunion. He also spent time with his sister, Betty Putnam, and several nieces and nephews and their families. He also spent time with cousins Danna Johnson of Mapleton, Christie Cochran of Washburn and Wilza Robertson of Portage Lake, taking time to visit with niece Anissa Levesque and her family.
The next cousin making the trek to the County was Anneke Kierstead of Rhode Island. She spent time visiting all the family and staying at the home of John and Wilza Robertson in Portage Lake.
Within a few days, the County kin were visited by another cousin, Charlotte Hughes, and her daughter ,Theresa Lea Cusano, of Connecticut. They also made stops at all the other cousins and enjoyed a lunch with their family living in Allagash. The two drove around Caribou and Woodland, checking out the old home farm and other places where family members used to live. All this brought back many fond childhood memories. While mother and daughter were in Maine, Theresa’s husband, Tony Cusano, was busy gaining notoriety and winning a trophy for his 1976 big black Chevy Nova SS.
Before they returned home, they enjoyed picking a couple baskets of potatoes – a fun event that Theresa had never experienced and Charlotte didn’t consider fun. They also got a chance to take home some good home-grown veggies, canned items and pickles. Plans are being thought over for a trip home again next year, maybe with Charlotte’s other daughter, Bonnie Jeanne, or son, Tim.
