Stephanie Ouellette, 19 of Wallagrass, and a student at the Loring Job Corps Center in Limestone, majoring in the Culinary Arts Technical Training Program has been selected as the “Student of the Month” for August 2008. Ouellette entered the Job Corps program in July of 2007 following her graduation from Fort Kent High School. She had completed one year of Culinary Arts vocational studies at the St. John Valley Technical Center in her Junior year. However, the program was discontinued and she was unable to continue her career interest during her senior year. Consequently, she learned about the Culinary Arts Career Training Program at Loring Job Corps Center and decided to enroll in the program. Ouellette is very involved in the Student Government Association at Loring JCC, serving as treasurer and general store manager of the Student Government Association. Additionally, while at Loring she has completed Leadership II classes, became first aid/CPR certified, completed her Culinary Arts Serv-Safe certification requirement, earned her drivers license and has been recognized for having perfect attendance. She also has been an active member of the Center’s EEO and Diversity committees, all while holding two leisure time employment positions.
The young woman expresses that her love for cooking has been developed by the influence of both her mother as well her grandmother who is a wedding-cake decorator. Her uncle has worked in the food service area of the University of Maine at Fort Kent and the Northern Maine Medical Center Ouellette fully intends to carry on this family tradition by completing the Loring’s Culinary Arts program, after which she plans to enroll at the New England Culinary Arts Institute in Dover, NH to earn an associates degree, in order to become a baking and pastry chef specialist.
Ouellette is noted by LJC staff to be a very good natured, positive student, always displaying a can-do proactive attitude that will take her a long way toward successfully achieving her goals in the culinary arts field.
