Mona Martin, young adult librarian at the Caribou Public Library was recent awarded the first ever Maine Library Association Youth Services Section’s Beg, Borrow or Steal mini-grant. “All of us are trying to do the same thing,” said Martin, “we all want to provide successful, quality programs at the lowest possible costs.” With this goal in mind, librarians attending the conference in August, literally beg, borrow or steal plans for programs, crafts and other valuable information, including ways to connect with patrons, provide services and maintain a collection.
One such idea, a dragon egg hunt based on Sarah L. Thomson’s book,” Dragon’s Egg was enhanced by Martin in her winning grant application. “The money from this grant will provide a unique learning experience for enhancing library skills and asset building while exploring the world of dragons, something we all enjoy,” stated Martin. The dragon filled adventure for grades 6 through 12 was held in late Decembers at the Caribou Public Library.
One purpose of the Maine Library Association (MLA) is “to promote and enhance the value of libraries and librarianship through the fostering of cooperation among those who work in and for libraries.” The Youth Services Section of MLA is composed of children’s librarians and other interested librarians. The section sponsors programs annually, including the Beg, Borrow or Steal Conference, during which member librarians attend with the purpose of sharing ideas and learning from what others have done.
