PRESQUE ISLE — For over 40 years, Northeast Publishing Co. has rolled several longstanding community newspapers and a wide assortment of business cards, brochures and catalogs off the presses. Northeast Publishing prints The Star-Herald of Presque Isle, the Houlton Pioneer Times, the Aroostook Republican and News of Caribou and the Piscataquis Observer of Dover-Foxcroft, all weekly newspapers with long, proud traditions of covering local events.
The Presque Isle-based printing plant also produces County Crossroads, a monthly publication which features an extensive calendar of events and feature stories about life in Aroostook County, and The Maine Potato News, the official publication of the Maine Potato Board and the entire state industry.
“The role the community newspaper plays is extremely important. It affects a lot of lives and we take this mission seriously,” said Roger Tremblay, NEP’s director of operations.
The company often hosts visitors — customers, community service groups and students of all ages – for tours of the expansive printing facility.
“We want to tell our story and show the public what we are doing to position ourselves to better serve them in the new century,” said Tremblay. “Our investment in people and technology is impressive and this is our chance to show people what we do and how we do it.
“I am especially proud of the people who strive to make everything printed at Northeast Publishing of highest quality and value,” he said. “It isn’t enough that we have the latest digital technology… An investment in the best people is equally important in what we do.”
Employees at the printing firm, many of whom have been in the business 15 or more years, have kept up with training and technology, he said.
“Our staff has over 500 years of combined experience in the printing and publishing field and we use this pool of knowledge and skill to better serve our customers,” said Tremblay.
Guided tours will give people a good look at what happens “behind the scenes” in the making of a newspaper or full-color brochure.
Northeast Publishing Co. is a subsidiary of the Bangor Publishing Co. – owners of the Bangor Daily News.
While the individual newspapers have offices in the towns they cover, the printing plant is located in the Skyway Industrial Park in Presque Isle on Missile Street.
