PRESQUE ISLE – In 1957, C. Hazen Stetson and eight other men met at the Northeastland Hotel in Presque Isle to incorporate the United Fund of Presque Isle. Soon, United Fund organizations were created in Fort Fairfield, Caribou, and Limestone, as well.
Twenty years later, the “Greater Presque Isle” and Caribou groups were combined to form the United Fund of Central Aroostook, and later that same year, other communities joined to create the Presque Isle Regional United Fund.
Today, that organization is known as the United Way of Aroostook, and during the 2008-09 fiscal year, the UWA will invest approximately $360,000 into the county.
In order to be able to continue supporting the communities of northern Maine effectively, the United Way of Aroostook relies on not only state and federal funding, but support from local individuals and businesses. This support might come in the form of monetary donations, or it might be seen through in-kind services. It is important to note that 99.3 percent of all donations stay right here in the county.
Over the years, Advantage Payroll Services has been a strong supporter of the United Way.
“The United Way has enjoyed and appreciated the payroll service that has been provided by Advantage Payroll Services,” said Claudia Stevens, executive director of the United Way of Aroostook. “In the nine years that I have been with the United Way, we have never had a problem of any kind. Our paychecks always arrive in a timely manner. In addition, I never worry about payroll taxes getting to the IRS in a timely manner because I am confident that it is all taken care of. We’ve never had a problem, and all reports are filed appropriately. Many thanks to Advantage Payroll and all they do for the United Way of Aroostook.”
